Our line of "Tennessee Fainting Goats" originating from breeders in the Elk Valley region of east TN. These goats were known for their stocky, compact build, friendliness & “fainting” prowess. Since the early 1900's a few "Whistle Creek" & "Baird's Creek" breeders, raising mostly black & white goats, kept this breed pure. Their goats were raised primarily as a food source on small family farms. By the mid 1960’s, just a few of the goats remained in that county & only one breeder continued raising them.
CRR's foundation stock came from the last remaining goats in this line that dates back long before any “fainting goat” registries had been established. Two breeding does came to us when the owner was unable to care for his herd. Both of these does became the building block for our breeding program which began in December 2000.
In 2004, CRR began raising and breeding Buckeye Chickens, a rare and endangered heritage breed of poultry. These birds were the only breed of chicken ever developed in Ohio. Perhaps this could explain their name, "Buckeye"? Some believe their name was given due to their deep rich brown color, similar to the buckeye nut.....we may never know!

We became interested in preserving rare breeds thru research and learning more about American heritage farm breeds that were slowly disappearing due to the loss of the family farms. The ALBC (American Livestock Breed Conservancy) is an ideal source for information on these rare, endangered or threatened animals and birds. Myotonic Goats & Buckeye Chickens are ideally suited for our SW Ohio climate.
Located in Southwestern Ohio, 40 miles north of Cincinnati, Crains Run Ranch (CRR) is a family owned operation dedicated to preserving rare and/or endangered livestock & poultry. Our facility is on the border of Warren & Montgomery Counties with easy access from either I-75 or I-675.
